College of Business Internship Program

An Internship is work experience that integrates the strengths of a business education with the skills and training of on-the-job experience. It complements and enhances a student’s academic training and provides a “real world” introduction to that individual’s career field.

Business majors at A&M- Corpus Christi with a second semester junior standing or above and with a grade point average of 2.75 in their upper division work, 9 hours upper division work complete in major, and 12 hours of upper division general course work complete can apply to participate in an internship. Accounting majors will need to have 12 hours of upper division course work in accounting complete and an upper level GPA of 3.0 or higher to apply for an internship. Students receive three hours of credit for the experience (business elective) as well as a grade. The course grade will be given by the faculty sponsor who will consider the supervisor evaluation, the oral presentation, and the written report. There will be an end of semester evaluation by the supervisor. Accounting students will keep a diary comprising a chronological list of all work experience gained in the internship experience.

The work experience:

• Must be in your major.

• Must consist of a minimum of 120 hours per semester.

• The salary is negotiated between the employer and student. Students will normally perform some routine tasks but need to spend the majority of their time working on a challenging project or function that requires crucial thinking, imagination, originality, common sense, and emphasizes the development of professional skills.

Student needs to:

• Meet with his/her advisor and submit paperwork the semester prior to enrolling in the internship

• Register with the Internship Coordinator, and procure a faculty sponsor.

• Interview with employers.

• Register for course after all paperwork is complete

• Complete a project for the employer.

• Write a project proposal for your faculty sponsor.

• Turn in a written report for the internship, with a copy to both the faculty sponsor and the internship coordinator, and make an oral presentation to your faculty sponsor.

CREDIT FOR THE INTERNSHIP WILL BE WITHHELD UNTIL THE EVALUATION FROM THE EMPLOYER AND THE COPY OF THE WRITTEN REPORT ARE IN THE FILES OF THE INTERNSHIP COORDINATOR.
